Wednesday, September 25, 2019 | Phoenix Country Club

The Sandra Day O’Connor Institute was honored to welcome Richard Brookhiser, award-winning author of John Marshall: The Man Who Made the Supreme Court, to Phoenix on recently for its Distinguished Speakers Series. An American journalist, biographer and historian, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal at the White House in 2008.

Mr. Brookhiser enlightened the audience at the sold-out event with his in-depth knowledge of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835, who remains the longest-serving Chief Justice in Supreme Court history. Chief Justice Marshall is widely regarded as one of the most influential justices ever to sit on the Supreme Court. Prior to his appointment on the Court, he served as the U.S. Secretary of State under President John Adams. Following remarks by Mr. Brookhiser, Judge Roslyn Silver, Chief Judge, District Court of Arizona, moderated the insightful Q&A portion of the program.

The occasion also celebrated the Sandra Day O’Connor Day Proclamation by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, marking the 38th anniversary of Justice O’Connor being sworn in as the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court.
